History, Places, Prices, and Tips

Saint Rose of Lima (1586-1617) is the most iconic saint of Peru and all of the Americas, recognized as the Patron Saint of the Americas, the Indies, and the Philippines. She was the first woman born in the Americas to be canonized by the Catholic Church, and her image transcends the religious to become a cultural and historical symbol.

Born in the Viceroyalty of Peru, Saint Rose lived in a context of great colonial splendor, but she chose humility and service to others over comfort. Today, her legacy lives on in temples, shrines, and museums that are part of one of Lima’s most important tourist routes.

📜 Complete History of Saint Rose of Lima

Saint Rose was born Isabel Flores de Oliva on April 30, 1586, in Lima. Her nickname “Rosa” originated when, according to tradition, her mother saw her face transform into a rose while she slept. From a young age, she displayed a pious character and a profound love for those in need.

She chose not to marry, devoting her life to prayer, penance, and caring for the sick. In her garden hermitage, she prayed and prepared remedies from medicinal herbs for those in need.

At a time when women had few options outside of marriage or the convent, Saint Rose chose to live as a Dominican tertiary, without being cloistered, which allowed her to serve her community directly. She died on August 24, 1617, at the age of 31, and her tomb is located in the Convent of Santo Domingo.

She was beatified in 1668 and canonized in 1671 by Pope Clement X, becoming the first saint of the Americas. Her feast day is celebrated every August 30, a holiday in Peru, with processions, Masses, and pilgrimages.
