RECOMMENDATIONS

Recommendations for the Humantay Lagoon Tour from Cusco

1. Acclimatize before the excursion

Humantay Lagoon is located at over 4,200 meters above sea level, so it is essential to spend at least 2 or 3 days in Cusco before starting the hike. This will help your body adapt to the altitude and reduce the risk of altitude sickness.

2. Wear appropriate clothing for mountain weather

Wear layered clothing: a thermal base layer, a warm base layer (such as a fleece or sweater), and a waterproof base layer. The weather in the area can change rapidly, and wind, cold, and light rain are common, even during the dry season.

3. Wear hiking shoes

The trail to the lagoon includes a steep climb of approximately 1.5 hours. Wear hiking boots with good non-slip soles to walk safely on rocky and wet terrain.

4. Bring sunscreen and sunglasses

Despite the cold, solar radiation at altitude is very intense. Wear broad-spectrum sunscreen, sunglasses with UV protection, and a cap or wide-brimmed hat.

5. Hydrate constantly

Drinking water before and during the hike is key to staying energized and preventing symptoms of altitude sickness. You can also bring coca leaves or natural pills to help with altitude sickness.

6. Don’t forget energy snacks

Bring dried fruit, cereal bars, or dark chocolate. These foods will give you an energy boost without overloading your stomach.

7. Book an authorized tour

The best way to visit Humantay Lagoon is through a travel agency registered in Cusco. They will take care of transportation, a professional guide, breakfast, and lunch, ensuring a safe and complete experience.

8. Bring cash in soles

There are no ATMs in the nearby communities, nor are cards accepted. It’s advisable to bring cash if you want to rent a horse, buy snacks, or give tips.

9. Protect the natural environment

Respect nature: don’t leave trash, avoid touching the lagoon, and stay on marked trails. Humantay Lagoon is a fragile ecosystem that deserves to be preserved.

10. Best months to visit

The ideal season is from April to October, during the dry season. During these months, the sky is usually clear and the hike is more pleasant. Avoid the rainy months (November to March) if you want better views.

Salkantay and Machupicchu I booked my tour to Salkantay 4 months ago and it was a fantastic experience. From the organization everything was excellent. I arrived in Cusco, Peru, a day before the tour, and that same day we were given a brief explanation about how the adventure would unfold. The next day we were picked up promptly and visited the beautiful lagoon of Humantay. The food was super delicious, thanks to our chef Erik, quite a chef! The next morning, we woke up early and our guide was already ready to start the walk to Salkantay. The route was a little exhausting, but it was totally worth it for the scenery: stunning nature, unique flora and fauna. Finally, we arrived in Aguas Calientes to finish our visit with the impressive Machu Picchu. An unforgettable experience, 100% recommended

Better than we expected! A very different region from the others, very interesting to listen to and learn about the local history, are many pools that are there since the pre-Inca period, more than 3,000, and the most magical is that it keeps the income of hundreds of families for years and years.
