ITINERARY

DAY 1 CUSCO – CLOUD FOREST – PILCOPATA LODGE

📅 Detailed Route

We will leave Cusco very early in the morning in our vehicle. We will cross interesting valleys between the Andes Mountains and picturesque rural communities. Visit the pre-Incan tombs of the Lupaca culture and then stop in Paucartambo, a beautiful colonial town, and visit the interesting city museum. Along the way, we will have lunch in the cloud forest. Will continue our descent through the cloud forest, an area rich in endemic species, such as the spectacled bear and the cock-of-the-rock, Peru’s national bird that performs a unique courtship ritual. We may also see orchids, bromeliads, ferns, and more. We will continue to observe the spectacular nature throughout our journey until we reach the Pilcopata lodge, where we will have dinner and spend the night.

DAY 2 PILCOPATA – AMAZON MANU LODGE – LAKE MACHUWASI

📅 Detailed Route

In the morning, we will have breakfast at the lodge and board our vehicle to head to Atalaya. On the way, we will visit a coca plantation (hummingbird garden optional). In Atalaya, we will be provided with rubber boots and take a 40-minute boat ride to reach the lodge, where we can then rest or swim in the river. After lunch, you will also have the option of ziplining. In the afternoon, we will visit Lake Machuwasi, where we will explore by raft to observe birds, such as the prehistoric hoatzin, and, with luck, other animals such as monkeys and capybaras. We will then take a night walk through the forest to look for insects and amphibians. After the night walk, we will have dinner and spend the night.

Free optional zip line activity: Our guests at the Amazon Manu Lodge have the opportunity to enjoy a unique and breathtaking view of the jungle as they fly through the canopy between platforms built high in the trees. All equipment used is high-altitude and safe. After gliding at high speed through the canopy of the incredible Amazon rainforest, you can rappel 20 meters to the ground. After dinner, we will take a night walk where we can observe arachnids, insects, frogs, and more.

DAY 3: AMAZON MANU LODGE – ATALAYA - CUSCO

📅 Detailed Route

Very early in the morning, we will board our boat and head to the macaw clay lick, a wall along the riverbank where different species of parrots, such as the blue-headed parrot, the white-eyed parakeet, the chestnut-fronted macaw, among others, gather every morning. Here they eat the clay, which is rich in minerals and helps them digest and eliminate toxins from their bodies. We will then return to the lodge for breakfast and take the 40-minute boat ride back to Atalaya, where we will board the vehicle for the return to Cusco. We will have lunch along the way back to Cusco, arriving around 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

RECOMMENDATIONS

🧳 What to Bring on the 3-Day / 2-Night Manu Tour

👕 Light, Long-Sleeved Clothing

The Amazon rainforest is humid and hot, with temperatures often exceeding 28°C. It’s recommended to wear cool, breathable clothing (such as cotton or dry-fit) with long sleeves, as this protects against both the intense sun and insects. Avoid very dark-colored clothing, as it attracts mosquitoes, and avoid light-colored clothing, as it can easily get dirty during the hikes.

🌧️ Rain Poncho or Light Jacket

Rainfall in Manu can occur at any time of year, even during the dry season. A rain poncho or windbreaker will allow you to continue hiking or sailing without problems and stay dry in the middle of the jungle. It’s an essential accessory for uninterrupted enjoyment.

🦟Mosquito Repellent and Sunscreen

The humid climate favors the presence of insects, especially mosquitoes. It’s essential to bring a good-quality repellent (ideally with DEET or natural formulas like citronella if you prefer organic). It’s also key to use water- and sweat-resistant sunscreen, as sun exposure while hiking and rafting can be intense.

📹Camera and Binoculars

The jungle is a paradise for photography and birdwatching enthusiasts. A camera with a good zoom lens and binoculars are essential for capturing macaws, monkeys, butterflies, and even caimans from a distance. Don’t forget to bring extra batteries and enough memory, as electricity in the lodges may be limited.

💉Yellow Fever Vaccination (optional, recommended)

Although not mandatory, it is recommended to have the yellow fever vaccination before entering Amazonian areas such as Manu. This provides additional protection against mosquito-borne diseases and allows for unrestricted travel to other Amazonian countries.

🥾 Trekking shoes or rubber boots

Rainforest hikes involve crossing wet trails, muddy areas, and even small streams. Therefore, proper footwear makes all the difference. Rubber boots are ideal for preventing slipping and keeping your feet dry, while trekking shoes with non-slip soles are practical for longer treks.

FAQs

❓ Frequently Asked Questions about the 3-Day / 2-Night Manu Tour

1. What is the best time to visit Manu?

The best time to visit Manu is between May and October, when there is less rain and the trails are more accessible. However, the rainy season (November to April) also offers green landscapes, stronger river flows, and greater amphibian and insect activity. During both seasons, you can observe exotic animals and birds, so it depends on the traveler’s preferences.

2. What types of animals can I see on this tour?

During the 3-Day / 2-Night Manu Tour, it is common to see birds such as the cock-of-the-rock (Peru’s national bird), parrots, macaws, and toucans. You may also encounter howler monkeys, capuchins, caimans, multi-colored insects, frogs, giant butterflies, and, with a bit of luck, mammals such as sachavacas and armadillos.

3. Does the tour include meals and lodging?

Yes. The package includes all meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) prepared with fresh local produce. Accommodations are in eco-lodges with comfortable beds, mosquito nets, and basic amenities. Everything is designed to offer comfort without losing the authentic jungle experience.

4. What is the difficulty level of this tour?

The tour is considered easy to moderate, suitable for people with a basic level of fitness. The hikes are usually not very long, although the humidity and heat can make them more challenging. No previous trekking experience is required, but a willingness to participate in activities in natural environments is necessary.

5. Are vaccinations required to enter Manu?

It is not a mandatory requirement, but it is recommended that you have the yellow fever vaccination before visiting the Amazon. It is also advisable to bring mosquito repellent and follow the guide’s instructions during the tour.

6. How do I get to Manu from Cusco?

The tour begins in Cusco. You travel by land to Atalaya or Pilcopata, passing through traditional villages and the Cloud Forest. The journey then continues by motorboat along the Madre de Dios River until you enter the Manu cultural zone, where the tour activities take place.

7. What should I bring on the tour?

It is important to bring light, long-sleeved clothing, a waterproof poncho, mosquito repellent, sunscreen, a hat, a flashlight, a camera, and binoculars. Also, trekking shoes or rubber boots for jungle hikes. All of these items make the experience more comfortable and safe.

8. Can children take the tour?

Yes, it is a family tour. Children greatly enjoy the short hikes, animal watching, and boat rides. However, it’s recommended that they be over 6 years old to fully enjoy the experience and better adapt to the Amazonian climate.

Salkantay and Machupicchu I booked my tour to Salkantay 4 months ago and it was a fantastic experience. From the organization everything was excellent. I arrived in Cusco, Peru, a day before the tour, and that same day we were given a brief explanation about how the adventure would unfold. The next day we were picked up promptly and visited the beautiful lagoon of Humantay. The food was super delicious, thanks to our chef Erik, quite a chef! The next morning, we woke up early and our guide was already ready to start the walk to Salkantay. The route was a little exhausting, but it was totally worth it for the scenery: stunning nature, unique flora and fauna. Finally, we arrived in Aguas Calientes to finish our visit with the impressive Machu Picchu. An unforgettable experience, 100% recommended

Better than we expected! A very different region from the others, very interesting to listen to and learn about the local history, are many pools that are there since the pre-Inca period, more than 3,000, and the most magical is that it keeps the income of hundreds of families for years and years.
